NYC Insider Tips on Thanksgiving in New York City – Macy’s Parade and Map, Where to Stay and Eat
Thanksgiving in New York City can be a wonderful experience if you plan it correctly. These NYC Insider Tips will keep you from being one of those tourists I see all the time who have not planned accordingly for their holiday and are left wandering around in the cold or rain, with their poor children, looking for a restaurant or restroom near the Parade route, after 5 hours of standing outside.
Where to Stay Thanksgiving weekend – Some NYC hotels have great views of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (and some don’t!), making it easy to stay warm and dry, use a rest room, eat and STILL watch the Parade from a prime spot. Many of them also offer Thanksgiving in New York City Hotel Packages (though they can be pricey). Even if your room does not have a view of the parade, some of the hotels have restaurants or have worked out deals with local venues that do offer views of the Parade. Please note the Parade changed in 2009 and outdated hotel information exists claiming to be on the Parade route, when they no longer are on the route. A Parade Route Map can be found on the Macy’s website. These hotels may be still be close to the Thanksgiving Parade Route, but not actually on it.
Balloon Set Up - This can actually be as much fun as the Parade itself and many New Yorkers have stood outside with hot chocolate and watched the Parade balloons being blown up. You get an up close view of the balloons, with far less crowds and kids often find it funny to see just arms or legs, or just a head blown up with the rest of the balloon still deflated. Thanksgiving Parade Balloon Set up takes place the day before the Parade, usually starting at 3:00 pm, on either side of the American Museum of Natural History.
Where to Stand – There are mixed reviews on where to stand, and some years the best place just depends on the weather. The best spot, of course, is anywhere you are near the front and can see the parade! The Macy’s website says the best viewing spot is on Central Park West. However, many people think this spot is fairly windy and cold, as it is shaded, and the parade members tend to rush through it. The latter folks prefer the 7th Avenue stretch of the Parade. You can check the best spots on the Thanksgiving Day Parade Map.
Where to Eat on Thanksgiving in New York City – the majority of restaurants in NYC are open on Thanksgiving Day, and many offer a pre-fixed Thanksgiving meal. Some NYC tourists prefer to eat right after the parade and tend to stick to restaurants that specifically appeal to tourists in the Times Square and Macy’s/ Herald Square area. These restaurants will be the most crowded, and likely, the least value for your money. If you are willing to venture away from the crowds, then NYC residential neighborhoods will offer you the best value and food for the money, especially as these neighborhoods are where New Yorkers eating out are likely to dine. Areas to consider are Greenwich Village, Union Square, Midtown East and Tribeca. For a reliable and very family friendly atmosphere, although still with a tourist appeal, you might consider Thanksgiving Dinner in Little Italy or Chinatown.
Things to Do on Thanksgiving in New York City – take note of which New York City Tourist Attractions are open and closed on Thanksgiving in New York City. All the major New York City Museums are usually closed, however, attractions such as Top of the Rock, Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty remain open 365 days per year. Please confirm any special holiday hours in advance.
Rockefeller Christmas Tree – if you are hoping to see the world famous tree lit during your stay, you will have to extend your trip, as the tree has always been lit on the first Wednesday in December. The Rockefeller Center Tree, without lights, will likely be on display during Thanksgiving weekend.

Cabaret Clubs Are it For NYC Nightlife
NYC nightlife covers a wide variety of entertainments, including parties, dancing, films, concerts, live theatre, opera, dance and so much more. The socialites and jet set enjoy sophisticated and lively entertainment, and this is why you will often find them in cabaret clubs.
Cabaret acts usually perform in a restaurant or nightclub, and the acts revolve around song, with comedy, drama and often dance thrown in the mix to keep it communicating with the audience. The music of choice in these clubs is jazz. The singer may be accompanied by a single piano or by an entire big band, depending on the performer and the venue.
There are several different cabaret clubs that make up a vibrant part of NYC nightlife. Some clubs only book headliner acts, while others are open to all.
Birdland is one of the greats when it comes to NYC
nightlife. Named after the famous alto saxophonist Charlie Parker in 1949 and originally located on Broadway, today’s Birdland is situated in midtown Manhattan. It still features some of the best jazz performers in the business including Pat Metheny, John Pizzarelli and others.
The Cafe Carlyle is another cabaret haunt of New York socialites. Opened in 1955, this was the performance home for the legendary cabaret performer Bobby Short.
Don’t Tell Mama’s is one of New York City’s hotspots. Known for its cabaret, it also features a famous piano bar, where amazing parties are held. Often after their performances on Broadway, Broadway stars and cast members head to Don’t Tell Mama’s to drink and sing, sharing their talent with everyone lucky enough to be in the room.
Feinstein’s at Loews Regency is a favorite supper club most popular with those in the know about NYC nightlife. Enjoy the food, the music and the sophistication that emanates from this great cabaret club. The man himself, Michael Feinstein, plays every December for the entire month at his wonderful club.
Joe’s Pub, at the Public Theatre, is another fabulous nightspot. They serve as host to a wide variety of music stylings, one of which is cabaret. They offer music seven nights a week, so whenever you are ready for some NYC nightlife they are available.
The Algonquin Hotel‘s Oak Room Supper Club is another famous room that features wonderful cabaret acts. Here you can enjoy a lovely Jazz Brunch on Sundays, as well as other musical presentations that help to make you feel that you have been transported back to the early heyday of jazz and cabaret as you enjoy a slice of NYC nightlife.

Sample Hotel Reservation Letter – What to Include and Why
Just follow the steps in this sample hotel reservation letter structure and you should have no unexpected troubles.
Before you begin:
Hotel reservation letters can vary in style, But just make sure you give the reservation staff all the information they need to make sure there are no misunderstandings or disappointments on arrival.
Every specific piece of information should be in a separate paragraph. This makes for easier reading.
Keep it short and sweet (it’s not an essay), and don’t forget the following information:
1. Opening (example):
Dear Sir/Madam
My name is (your name) and I would like to book a (type of room) in your hotel for (number) nights.
2. Dates and times: (important)
I/We will be arriving on (date, including the day of the week) at approximately (time). Departure will be on (date, including the day of the week) at (time).
Notes: -State the date and approximate time of arrival and departure because it helps the staff know which guests will be arriving first to prepare the way for them, so waiting time for your room is kept to a minimum.
-It’s always a good idea to also include how many nights you will be staying in brackets. This is a good way for the reservation staff to double check the length of your stay as hotels count nights and not days when preparing your invoice.
-Remember, even if you arrive there at 2 o’clock in the morning, that night counts and you are seldom entitled to remain in your room after 12 o’clock noon on your departure date.
3. Number of people: (important)
How many adults? How many children? (always include children’s ages).
4. Room type(s) and preferred location(s):
Single, double, suite, ground floor, top floor, overlooking the sea, etc.
5. Board preferences: (important)
Self catering/bed & breakfast/half board/full board/all-inclusive
Note: make sure the hotel you are considering has the services you desire as not all hotels offer things like all-inclusive, and what you get for each type of service may vary from one hotel or country to another depending on their policies (find out before making your reservation to avoid disappointments).
6. Special needs/desires: (optional)
Some people may have health conditions which may require special attention (migraine sufferers would probably want a quiet room far away from any entertainment facilities, for example). Business men/women may need an internet connection in their rooms, while others may just have special preferences (overlooking the sea, rooms on upper floors, etc). These should be specified in your letter.
Note: Obviously the needs of those with medical conditions will be given more importance than other preferences if the hotel is fully booked, so don’t be surprised if you cannot get what you wanted unless you have the option and have paid for it specifically.
7. Facilities: (depending on the hotel)
If there are special facilities (sauna, jacuzzi, etc.) which need to be reserved before using them, you may wish to do so in advance to avoid waiting.
8. Contact information: (important)
Especially your phone number, cell phone and/or fax number.
*The main thing to remember is to include all the important information above and keep the hotel reservation letter short. The hotel staff prefer it that way and it helps to avoid confusion. You can even use bullet text to display the information.

An Overview of Slate Tiles
This unique, exotic stone is frequently referred to as a rebellious alternative to the ordinary, uninteresting granite standard of stonework, because of its similar strength and resistance to weathering.
Sizes
Slate is a stone naturally mined from stone quarries and mountains worldwide. This material, when removed, looks like sizable boulders of rock. These boulders are finished into square shapes, and then cut into sizes and forms that can be easily used.
Slate tiles are available in standard sizes of 12 inches by 12 inches. Other tiles, however, are available in 16-inch, or even 24-inch squares. These tiles can often be found in thicknesses of one-half to three-fourths inches deep. Sizes larger than 24 inches square are usually described as slabs. Essentially, slabs are larger, thicker, and more irregularly shaped than tiles.
Tiles can also be cut into smaller squares. In fact, a skilled fabricator is able to cut these tiles into various exotic forms, and even circles. Although most 12-inch square tiles are available in thicknesses of 3/8 inches, this number can vary slightly. Slate stones are dimensional in nature, and this affects the tile’s thickness.
Finishing
Slate tiles can be purchased with many different types of finishes.
For example, the most dimensional finish is available when clefted slate is used. This form of stone features peaks, as well as breaks, within the stone’s surface. This type of finish, often described as natural, appears to have been removed directly from a mountainside. This is actually the case. Additionally, the degree of cleft present in a stone differs depending on the type of material. While some tiles are flat, they are still referred to as clefted, because they are not perfectly smooth but feature a rare bump or rise in the surface. Other tiles that have huge bumps, breaks, and crevasses are also described as clefted. Handle the stone to get a concept of the amount of cleft present. This quality will have a significant impact on how workable the stone is, or how level it would be if walked on. These stones provide the most traction and prevention against slipping.
Another type of finish is honed slate. This type of tile has been smoothed with the use of a powered sander or polisher until it is nearly flat and smooth. Honed slate often features alterations in color. Usually colors are less bright, although sometimes interesting patterns arise from the grinding down of peaks and crevasses that were previously present. These tiles are not as protective against slipping, but do provide an intermediate degree of traction.
Slate can also be polished until it achieves a high gloss, or luster. Only certain types of slate can be polished to this extent; others can only become hi-honed.
In contrast, brushed slate is ground down only to the point where the peaks are removed from the clefts. The dimensional nature of the stone is unaffected.
Gauged tiles are leveled at the factory until each is approximately of the same thickness. Only top-quality gauged materials should be used; if tiles are not all the same size, the project will be full of gaps.
Exterior Slate Tiles
Certain types of slate are useful for outdoor projects, while others are not. The chemical structure of the tile is the primary characteristic that defines how useful the tile will be outdoors. Red slates, for example, are not durable if used outside. The reason for this is that the red hue often results from iron oxide that has formed on the stone’s surface. Iron oxide is the same compound that creates rust, and the tile responds in to iron oxide in much the same way that metal responds to rust. It tends to crumble after prolonged exposure to rain and snow.
Other factors affecting the stone’s durability include its ability to absorb water, and the degree to which it tends to cleft, or split.
Any slate product that is used outdoors should be sealed with a water-resistant sealant that clogs the stone’s pores. Additionally, understand that the effects of normal weathering include the dulling of colors present in natural slate tiles.
Proper Tile Care and Maintenance
Typically, slate absorbs very little water. Therefore, stains or other liquids rarely permeate the stone’s pores or damage the stone internally. Water-resistant sealants are usually applied to slate tiles during the installation process. This protects the stone against molds or stains.
Using a sealer like this also helps the slate to appear brighter, and the colors to seem more vibrant. Unless a sealant is regularly re-applied, however, the colors will tend to fade with the effects of time. In fact, tiles can even be treated with sealants yearly to provide added protection against high traffic and stains.
Slate is easily cleaned, and normally can be thoroughly cleaned with a combination of soap and water. Other soaps with stripping agents are also available at local dealers that are designed to remove deep dirt stains.
Practical features
Slate is typically used for the construction of floors as well as counter tops. It can, however, be used for almost any home project, including back splashes or fireplace surrounds. In fact, this material is also used in a group of home decorating projects that were engineered and created by PebbleArt. It is frequently used in bathroom renovations because of its resistance to slipping and ability to conceal dirt.
These same features cause slate to be a popular material for kitchen construction as well.

21 Club
Once a glamorous speakeasy, the venerable 21 Club has generated renewed interest and respect since its acquisition by Orient-Express Hotels, Trains & Cruises. If you’ve never experienced what Bloomberg News calls “the most New York of New York restaurants,” you can’t afford to miss this great opportunity to see what’s kept 21 going for 80 years.
Telepan
This popular Upper West Side restaurant is the creation of Chef Bill Telepan, who previously garnered three stars in the New York Times for JUdson Grill. This time out, the Times said Telepan’s eponymous restaurant “will warm hearts and sate appetites.” Discover that for yourself with the Restaurant Week three-course lunch for $24.07, served both weeks, Wed. – Fri.
JoJo
Celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s first New York restaurant, JoJo, was awarded three stars from the New York Times when it opened it ’91, and is still going strong following an extensive renovation. The Timesnow calls the space “sumptuous” with the “heart of a bistro.” For Restaurant Week, JoJo’s is serving its regular lunch prix fixe menu with two small plates and a dessert for $24.07, and a 3-course dinner menu for $35.00.
David Burke & Donatella
Acclaimed Chef David Burke and his partner, restaurateur Donatella Arpaia, are (happily for us) participating in Winter Restaurant Week again this year for lunch at their east side restaurant. Located just steps away from Bloomingdale’s, this is a great place to lunch before an afternoon of shopping, and the special prix fixe menu provides a great opportunity to experience Burke’s cuisine and have a few dollars left for Bloomie’s. The lunch menu features three courses with lots of choices, and we’re told not to miss the whimsical Cheesecake Lollipop Tree with raspberries and bubblegum whipped cream.
Blue Smoke
If you city folk have a hankerin’ for some authentic pit barbecue, head for this very popular Union Square Hospitality Group restaurant in Murray Hill. This is the real deal, so get your fix during Restaurant Week for both lunch and dinner.
Amma
A two star review in the New York Timesdistinguishes this Indian restaurant, which, according to the Times’William Grimes,by “taking the back roads, and steering clear of the tired tourist sites, shows diners a different India, so old that it seems fresh.” Check out this winner during the Restaurant Week event for the lunch menu ($24.07), which includes choice of soup, appetizer, entree and dessert, or dinner ($35.00), which includes choice of soup, two appetizers, entree and dessert.
Le Cirque
The legendary Le Cirque restaurant in its latest incarnation in Midtown‘s Bloomberg corporate headquarters is described in the New York Magazine review as a “great, polished cruise ship of a restaurant.” Dine under the “big top” for Le Cirque’s Restaurant Week 2008 lunch menu, or in the cafe for dinner, which is served on a first come, first served basis (no reservations).
The Post House
“Possibly New York City’s most civilized steak house,” according to the New York Times, The Post Houseis perfect for “people who want their porterhouse with pomp and ceremony.” From the team behind a host of upscale restaurants including Smith & Wollensky, Park Avenue Winter, and Quality Meats, Post House has received its share of accolades from the press and foodies alike. A three-course prix fixe will be served at lunch for Winter Restaurant Week 2008.

Gusto Ristorante e Bar Americano
Restaurant Week is a great opportunity to sample some of Chef Anne Burrell’s cuisine, since Burrell, the chef of Gusto’s sister restaurant, Centro Vinoteca, has just taken over for Amanda Freitag at this popular West Village venue. Gusto will be offering special Restaurant Week menus for both lunch and dinner, and one can only hope the menus include the famous fried artichokes!
City Crab & Seafood Company
One of the cornerstones of Park Avenue South’s restaurant row, City Crab & Seafood Company specializes in seafood and steaks, in addition to a large raw bar and full service sushi bar. Come to this New York City restaurant which is “in its heart,” according to New York Magazine, “really a Maryland Crab Shack with an expanded menu,” for the Restaurant Week lunch and dinner prix fixes.
Brasserie Ruhlmann
Named for Art Deco designer Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann and helmed by Executive Chef Laurent Tourondel of the BLT group of restaurants, Brasserie Ruhlmann has the added plus of sitting in the heart of Rockefeller Plaza across from the skating rink. Bread Bar at Tabla
Tabla’s more affordable, casual counterpart, theBread Bar, is participating in Restaurant Week for both lunch and dinner. This Union Square Hospitality Group’s foray into “homestyle Indian cuisine” has been delighting neighborhood regulars for years, and just might make you join that group with an even more affordable introduction during Winter Restaurant Week.
Mesa Grill
Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay’s first restaurant and flagship, Mesa Grill, has been serving Flay’s signature Southwestern cuisine since 1991. The lunch and dinner Restaurant Week menus weren’t finalized at press time, but Mesa usually includes some of the restaurant’s signature dishes in its Restaurant Week choices.

Edgewater NJ Ferry Service: A Convenient Way to Travel
The Edgewater NJ ferry service offers an economical and convenient way to travel across the water. The ferry service operates throughout the year, from the NY Waterway Terminal at Edgewater Ferry Landing to the West Midtown Ferry Terminal in Manhattan. Also, there is a stop at the Port Imperial Ferry Terminal, which connects to additional ferry services. The ferry service connects to nearly half a dozen cross-town Manhattan bus routes.
Edgewater NJ Ferry Service: Things to Know
The commencement of the Edgewater NJ ferry service was announced in 2007. The Edgewater Ferry Landing is located at the Grand Cove Edgewater Marina where River Road intersects with Route 5. It is approximately 1.5 miles away from the George Washington Bridge.
The Edgewater NJ ferry service is available at intervals of 10 minutes during rush hours. However, on weekends and during off peak hours, the service is available every 20 minutes. The estimated trip time is 15 minutes.
The Edgewater Ferry Terminal has a ticket vending machine. You can make daily purchases or obtain advance tickets and monthly passes. The ticket kiosk accepts credit cards, debit cards and cash. One way fares for a single trip are as follows:
Adult – $9.50
Children of 5 years and below- No Fare
Children between 6 to 11 years- $6.00
Senior Citizens- $8.75
Fares for multiple trips are:
10 trips-$ 78.00
Monthly Passes-$272.00
Student Monthly Passes-$214.50
Full-time students need to get the student application form filled by their school officials. The application forms can be obtained from any New York Waterway ticket office.
Onsite parking is not permitted at the Edgewater Ferry Landing. The ferry terminal is strictly a ‘drop and go’ facility. You can use the bus service, the New Jersey Transit Bus Route 188 and 158. The 158 takes a route towards the south of River Road from Fort Lee. The 188 takes a route from North Bergen towards the north of River Road.
Further, you may use the free shuttle service provided by New York Waterway. The shuttle service connects to several major parts of the city. However, the seating space is limited and first come first serve principle is followed. The service operates according to departure and return schedule of the ferry.
